Tuesday, 20, March, 2012 It is not too late to begin fertilizing your St. Augustine lawn. At this time of year we use a 25-3-5 with 1.15% Atrazine to help kill broadleaf weeds that have already begun to grow. We will generally fertilize about 6-8 weeks apart. For those customers that were done in early February; we will fertilize again beginning the 1st week of April. In April we will use a Granular Fertilizer with 50% slow release soluble Nitrogen (as sulfur coated Urea) which is a slow release plus 4% Iron. The iron will make your lawn green up very quickly. In addition, we will spot treat Broadleaf weeds in the lawn. And for those customers who have us doing their shrub beds, we will fertilize as well as use an insecticide/fungicide for Azaleas & Crepe Myrtles for aphids and black sooty mold as needed. CARE INSTRUCTIONS: Water 20 minutes if no rain within 3 days and Mow once a week at 2 to 2.5 inches high for best results. Wednesday, 07, March, 2012 Azaleas are beginning to bloom; keep an eye out for Aphids or black sooty mold on the tops of the leaves. The mold is caused by Aphids exuding a sweet substance that drops to the leaf below and promotes the mold growth. It is easy to treat if caught early enough. Also, be sure to fertilize your grass with a Weed and Feed Fertilize, but get this fertilizer in the shrub beds as the weed portion of it can hurt shrubs, but if won't affect your trees in the yard. Any questions.? ; just ask. Friday, 03, February, 2012 It is beginning to warm up, although there are usually a few cold fronts that come in until the middle of March. February is the time to trim your Crepe Myrtles. They only bloom on new growth, so you can trim them back pretty severly and you will have lots of flowers come early summer. It is also the perfect time to fertilize your yard with a weed and feed fertilizer. Now that the soil temperature is above 60, the St. Augustine will begin to grow. In our Weed & Feed; we use Atrazine mixed into the fertilizer which won't bother any trees, but you must keep it out of the shrub beds as it could hurt sensitive shrubs. A slow release Nitrogen is important to extend the usefullness of the fertilizer til our next treatment in early April. |
